A Glue Gun designed and modernised taking inspiration from retro product languages. Same as technology, design too follows a path of obsoletion. Analogy design creates a sense of nostalgia; paired with modern elements, it is play over form and aesthetics that targets the consumer psychology of possessing something unique.

Design evolves with technology. Apart from aesthetics, design is largely influenced by advancements is manufacturing/fabrication technologies. Looking back at products, simple moulds created boxy forms with a singular aim of accommodating components. Currently design is all about creating an impression and most importantly creating desire. This studio helped understand various design trends, teaching designers to adapt to newer trends that might follow in the future.
Creating an uninvented product imagined in a different design trend timeline, to specifically target consumer want psychology.
Understanding the consumer is key, even in a hypothetical context such as this. The Lotus Blossom Product mapping helps with affinity mapping & understanding problem/ opportunity areas. It provides a wide framework of all categories both relevant and irrelevant making sure all points have been adressed.
Areas of Enquiry
Deconstructing and studying an existing Glue Gun deliniating components and function.
Affordances & Signifiers
A 1:1 mockup using mdf. The trigger imitates that of an actual glue gun with a spring loaded behind, pushing it back into place. A few foam models were made to better understand the size/scale of the gun.
Using the inspiration board, various elements that strongly depicted characteristics from a retro timeline were taken and modified to wholesomely fit the products theme. The elements not only played a visual role but also added to functionality.
Having contrasting modern elements helps the user imagine the product in a current context keeping the analogy intact.
A light indicator communicates the guns power status. The stand susceptible to the glue guns fall was eliminated, with small bumps at both ends of the transparent module, it is elevated from the ground when kept flat on either side.
Ridges on the plastic around the heating element dissipates heat using heat sink like ridges keeping the surface relatively cooler preventing burns.
Designed for portability, it is one of the modern elements added to the analogy.
Design creates desire, and desire is perceived differently; this product was all about being recognised as a unique. To create a thought of "need" even when there isn't one, it describes the power of design over human mentality.
Distinguished trigger, a standout colour element used in most retro products.
A play of different materials and finishes. In the late 20th century, elements contributing towards look and feel, irrelative to the function were aded, making it one of the first examples of value addition in commercially designed products.
A carbon fibre conceptualisation, when added elements were not adequate, luxury retro products explored exotic material options to heighten already added value.
